The-Dream's "Love King" Projected To Sell 60K In First-Week
R&B singer The-Dream's Love King is reportedly en route to sell around 60,000 copies in its first-week on store shelves.
According to one-day estimates, Eminem's Recovery will once again top the charts.
The Eminem-fueled record business Recovery lasted about a week, as we head into the summer months, when the industry repairs to the Hamptons or Malibu. The comebacking hip-hop titan is a lock to repeat at #1 after selling a year's-best 740k as no debut this week comes close to six digits. Based on figures from those one-day music retailers who haven't opened up eBay franchises, Def Jam/IDJ's The-Dream will be the top newcomer on next Tuesday's chart, with a total in the 55-60k range.
Dream recently said he would quit making albums because of fans' lack of appreciation.
"Nope, there's not another album, this is it," Dream said in an interview with Ms. Drama in May. "Nobody appreciates music so I'm out. I'm out. I'm good, so take that. Like Jay said, maybe y'all will remember me when I fade to black. So it's out."
Last April, Dream contemplated making another album called Love/Affair.
Dream also addressed rumors of a fourth record in the works that sprang after he tweeted on March 27, "Love/Affair?" "We was having a conversation in the studio, about how if I would do another album, I would name it Love/Affair. Funny thing is, my computer was open and someone else typed it in. They put it in with a question mark and I was like 'Why did you do that? They're going to think it was me,'" he says. "I would have a big chance of wanting to do one if I was able to turn it into a movie like Purple Rain. Nobody wants to see someone do another album just lyrically based. When I'm telling a story, I'd much rather have someone see it," he says. "But I don't even know if I'm going to do Love/Affair. If I can do the movie then Love/Affair would be the soundtrack to that movie."
Despite not receiving a Grammy nomination this year, Dream's sophomore album debuted within Billboard's Top 5 in spring 2009.
Love vs. Money debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 151,000 copies in its first week. It also entered at number one on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and at number three on its Top Digital Albums chart in March 2009. In its second week, the album fell two positions to number four on the Billboard 200 with 56,000 copies sold. In its third week, the album fell nine spots and sold an additional 35,967 copies, and in its fourth week, it fell to number 19 and sold 27,972 more copies. Love vs. Money spent a total of 17 weeks on Billboard 200 chart. By May 2009, it had sold 331,000 copies in the United States, according to SoundScan.
