Drake's "Over" Director Talks Music Video, "It's Not Gonna Be What You Expect"
Director Anthony Mandler has shared some insight for what fans may expect from Drake's upcoming "Over" music video and said the Young Money rapper had a lot of input.
According to Mandler, the music video will be released in roughly two weeks.
I can tell you that it's not gonna be what you expect," Mandler said in an interview. "Drake and I were very conscious about trying to push the limits and trying to push things forward. He came to me because he wanted to throw away the conventions of a medium, and take chances and be daring and take certain themes that are relevant to him and try to visualize them in not the obvious way. We spoke at length about his whole story, about the concept of the record, he played me some other tracks, sent me some images, and I went back and did my own images, and started to craft a treatment and voilĂ . We kinda just met head on. We work really closely and he has Oliver, who's his creative director. Oliver is a really smart casemaker and he comes in and lends a third opinion. It was a great collaboration between the three of us. There was very little label influence."
Earlier this week, Drake talked about the video's importance.
"This is my first video," he said in an interview. "I've shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the the artist. Shooting the other videos I've done has been great. I really don't care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I've learned a lot from them. Today, I'm shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I'm shooting with Anthony Mandler...We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals. The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it's sort of a love story in the video."
The song's producer Boi-1da recently talked about its creation.
"He's a dude that makes sample quality music that people think it's a sample," Boi said in an interview. "Like 'Over' sounds like a sample but it's not a sample...That's the way Drake envisioned himself coming out, it described exactly how he was feeling at this moment. You know, the first line, the hook, he comes out saying 'I know way too many people in here that I didn't know last year.' It's explaining that his life, he has all these people around him now, but at the end of the day, he's going to prevail, it's not over yet. He has a lot more time to go, that's what it is you know. He felt like this is the moment that he wanted to capture for his first single."
Drake's Thank Me Later album is expected to debut in May.
Drake's LP is a reflection of how the upstart Toronto MC has become hip-hop's new leading man. "I tried to capture every great moment I've had in the last year," he says. "It's triumphant." To wit: He raps about a presumed love affair with Rihanna and his friendship with mentor Lil Wayne on "Fireworks." Drake mostly eschewed big names in favor of home-town producers (Boi-1da, Noah "40" Shebib) and a collaboration with New York indie rockers Francis and the Lights. "It's gonna be interesting," he says. "I hope it's pleasing to the ear."
