According to Cory, he shares a special bond with Wayne which surpasses artist-boss ties.
"I think Wayne is really one of the only people that understands me," Cory told DJ Envy in an interview. "Him and Mack [Maine], for him to reach out and understand [is great]. His spirits are up, you know, but nobody wants to be in that position. I know I wouldn't. For the position that he's in, he's spirits are definitely up, he's holding his own. Shout-out to Weezy again, he'll be out real soon and his spirits are high and everything and he's good. He's still working, getting things taken care of from where he's at."
Earlier this month, Gunz gave his reaction to being recently signed onto Young Money.
"Shout out to Wayne for giving me a shot. He kept it real. All I'mma say, that this is it. This is what it is. Everybody just better get ready...Wayne is gonna executive-produce the album," he explained in an interview. "I trust his insight. He's going to be overseeing everything. I'm gonna keep doing the things I been doing. I think that's what's gotten me noticed. I'mma just keep my grind moving. Whatever ventures I can do, I'm bringing my familythrough. My whole team is gonna eat. I'm just telling everybody to get ready...I haven't met Nicki [Minaj] yet. Me and [Drake] met a while back when they was doing the I Am Music Tour in Arizona."
Speculation on Wayne signing Gunz developed last March.
Lil Wayne is turning himself in today but last night he spent time live on webcam where he first talked about his recent show with Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden. Wayne later said that Cory Gunz would be the next artist on his Young Money label. "Shout out to my n---a Cory Gunz, about to be the newest member of the Young Money team." Gunz tweeted over the weekend, "LOL. Young Money!!!!!!"
Wayne was officially sentenced to a year behind bars in early March.
Lil Wayne has been sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty in a New York City gun case. The Grammy Award-winning rapper was taken away in handcuffs to start serving his term immediately after his sentencing. He'll serve his sentence in city jails, not a state prison. He could be released in about eight months with good behavior.
