DMX Admits To Getting Caught For "Dumb" Crimes, "It Wasn't The Smartest Thing To Do"

Excerpts from an upcoming VH1: Behind the Music special in which DMX addresses his 25-year drug addiction and legal troubles have landed online.

The program is set to premiere next week.

"When you reach a certain level of fame you have limited regard for the law. I wasn't killing people, I wasn't robbing people. So I wasn't doing crimes like that. I was doing dumb shit. It wasn't the smartest thing to do...You don't come to terms with something before you do it. It's only after you've done it that you realize, you know, maybe that wasn't the best thing to do. Sometimes you gotta fall down to know the feeling to get up."

The rapper's biographer, Smokey Fontaine, also speaks on the special about X's fight with drugs.

"The money exacerbated his addictions, absolutely. I mean, that's the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll story, right? Suddenly the world is your oyster."

X will be one of seven artists featured on the program.

VH1's "Behind The Music" returns with seven new episodes. Narrated by Jim Forbes, the series gives viewers an inside look into the personal and professional lives of DMX, Christina Aguilera, Eve, Courtney Love, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez and Usher. Beginning on Monday, June 7 at 8:00 PM* with "Behind The Music: DMX," the series goes full throttle with the stories, footage and music behind some of the most interesting and talented individuals in the music industry today.

Additional details on X's episode have been released on the Internet.

"Behind The Music: DMX" will trace the multi-platinum rapper's journey from his rough childhood where violent beatings from his mother led to a life of crime and jail time, to becoming one of the most successful hip hop artists of today. Viewers will get an in-depth look at DMX's battle to the top of the music charts, becoming the first hip-hop artist to have five consecutive records debut at number one and crossing over into a lucrative movie career. For the first time on camera, DMX comes clean about his criminal record, love life and his 25 year-long struggle with drug addiction. Candid interviews with his family, ex-wife, and hip hop luminaries Lyor Cohen, Irv Gotti, Swizz Beatz and Eve contribute to this in-depth profile of an incredibly gifted yet troubled artist.

DMX's "Behind the Music" episode will air Monday, June 7 at 8 PM EST.
