Nas & Kelis' Divorce Is Official, Child Support Battle Rages On
Former couple Nas and Kelis have officially had their marriage terminated.
According to reports, the marriage came to an end earlier this month.
Power couple Nas and Kelis announced that they were calling it quicks back in April 2009 despite being pregnant with their first son together. Since then they have gone through a nasty legal battle over child support and child custody. Finally, a little over a year later, the marriage has officially come to a close. According to TMZ, the divorce has become official, however the issues of child custody and support still remain. Right now Nas has to pay around $10,000 a month, which is a fee that he claims is too much for him. How long can they possibly draw this thing out?
In April, reports suggested Kelis wanted to rush her divorce from Nas.
According to documents filed last week, Kelis said in a declaration, "... it would be in the best interest of both of us if our marital status is terminated as soon as possible." Because she fears that the legal proceedings could take years to figure out, Kelis has requested that the judge immediately terminate their marriage -- and wait until a later time to resolve "all other issues." As for the odds that the two will rekindle their romance -- Kelis stated, "I believe there is no possibility of reconciliation with [Nas]."
The rapper recently said he was ready to move on and care for his family.
A Los Angeles judge dismissed the contempt allegation against the rapper Monday after he paid nearly $50,000 in child support to his estranged wife Kelis. Kelis' attorney sought the contempt charge earlier this year after Nas fell $200,000 behind on child and spousal support payments. He was ordered in December to pay more than $51,000 a month to Kelis and their infant son. In a statement released Wednesday, Nas says, "All I want to do is make music and raise my kids. Nothing else matters."
Recently, Nas said working on his Distant Relatives collaboration album with Damian Marley helped him fight through his personal issues.
"Personal life is what it is," he said Monday (May 17). "Everybody goes through it. Working on this record got me through it. Rockin' with D got me through it. His whole squad, his whole team, the way he rides, his whole culture. He didn't have to push anything on me. He didn't have to say anything particular. Just, I know this is my brother right here. Rockin' with him, I kept my head clear and focused on what we was doing, so it was all good."
