Jay-Z Takes Over Rolling Stone, Writes "500 Greatest Songs" Editorial

Rap mogul Jay-Z has reportedly taken his pen game to the next level by writing an editorial piece for Rolling Stone Magazine.

Reports of Jay's writing were revealed Tuesday (May 25) afternoon.

Mr. Carter has taken up yet another career, but this time not as a Rapper, Director, or CEO, but as a writer. Above are two excerpts written by Jay-Z from Rolling Stones upcoming issue. He writes about what music means to him and how music has changed for the better and for the worse.

Excerpts of Jay's piece have also been photo copied online.

"A great song doesn't attempt to be anything - it just is. When you hear a great song, you can think of where you were when you first heard it, the sounds, the smells. It takes the emotions of a moment and holds it for years to come. It transcends time. A great song has all the key elements - melody; emotion, a strong statement that becomes part of the lexicon; and great production. Think of "Bohemian Rhapsody," by Queen. That song had everything - different melodies, opera, R&B, rock -- and it explored all of those different genres in an authentic way, where it felt natural."

Aside from writing, Jay will be leading this year's BET Awards with the most nominations.

Rapper Jay-Z and his wife, Beyonce, will compete in three categories at the 2010 BET Awards. They're both nominated for video of the year, best collaboration and viewers' choice. Jay-Z received two nominations in the video of the year category, which includes newcomers B.o.B and Melanie Fiona. Jay-Z is the top contender with five nominations; he's also up for best male hip-hop artist. Beyonce, Fiona and Alicia Keys, who follow with four nods each, are all up for best R&B female artist. R&B crooner Trey Songz also received four nominations.

This summer, Jay will also be uniting with Eminem for a couple performances.

The two titans of the hip-hop world attended Wednesday night's New York-Detroit game at Comerica Park to announce they'd be playing at the Yankees' ballpark on Sept. 13. Eleven days earlier, though, Jay-Z will be back in the Motor City to play with Eminem at the latter's hometown ballpark, Comerica. They made the announcement during appearances on several television broadcasts of Wednesday night's game.
