Nicki Minaj On Repping NYC, "People Haven't Gotten That I'm Southside Jamaica, Queens"

Young Money's Nicki Minaj said her fans often forget that she is from New York City because she switches up her accent so much.

In the May issue of XXL, Minaj points out how she has developed a global image and appeal.

"I think very often people miss that I'm from New York, and I don't really know why that is, but I remember I said on Twitter one time, 'Shout out to Queens,' and all of the gay boys thought I was talking to them, and I realized that people haven't gotten that I'm Southside Jamaica, Queens, New York City. I feel like I say it a lot, but I guess I'm not saying it that much, or it's that I'm so diverse and I don't always rap with the New York accent--I switch it up, you know. People don't see me as just repping one city or one state. I actually really like that. That was always my goal: to be able to bridge that gap, you know, whether it's to London."

CNN's Capone recently talked about New York artists coming together like his recent album deal with Raekwon's label.

"You know, it's good for New York right now. Because if we can do it, a lot of other people can do it, man," 'pone said in an interview. "You never know, New York could just make one super group, you know what I'm saying? We just need to come together. And I think by IceH2O/Thugged-Out/Militainment coming together, that just shows that no matter how big of an artist you are, you can always merge with other big artists and make magic. And that's what we're doing, making magic."

Last February, New Jersey rapper Joe Budden gave Twitter suggestions on how New York rap could make a return.

"i really liked Loon btw.... he needs to come back," Joey wrote early Tuesday (February 23) morning. "& call me crazy, but Juelz [Santana], Jimmy [Jones] & Cam can bring New York back... I really believe that. The lox back on a major could bring NY back too.... A Rae & Ghost album... More $ behind Kiss... i'm tellin y'all, i know how 2 fix this sh*t !"

Earlier this week, Minaj turned down an opportunity to tour the country with Rihanna so she could complete her Young Money debut album.

"*sighs* how...how do i say this...hope the barbz will understand...hate letting them down. *sighs again while in deep thought*," she wrote. " Barbz I'm sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi's tour. I've decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand. Barbz, Thx 4 understanding. And Thanks to Rihanna 4 being a sweetheart and extending this great opportunity 2 me. Support the show! Luv, HB"
