Freeway On Life After Roc-A-Fella Records, "It's Time To Try My Hand With The Independent Thing" [Video]

Former Roc-A-Fella Records artist Freeway has explained his decision to leave the imprint and talked about his current connection with State Property.

According to Free, he is working on his new material with Peedi Crakk who was released from jail last month.

"I did my thing at The Roc, learned a lot over there so I feel as though it's time to try my hand with the independent thing," Free told television personality DJ Envy. "It's crazy man, it feels real good... I still speak to everybody. I keep good contact with everybody, it's all good with me man, we rocking... [In State Property,] everybody's good. Hopefully, hopefully we'll put [a State Property album] together. Shout-out to Peedi Crakk, he just came home from the joint, we're working on his stuff. And we grinding, everybody's grinding, trying to put a nice situation together for themselves. So hopefully we can come together after that."

Peedi was released from incarceration in early April.

Former State Property rapper Peedi Crakk has finally returned home after spending more than a year in prison. Though his incarceration was largely kept private, the rapper became noticeably quiet after announcing that he was signing with indie upstart Amalgam Digital, for whom he was recording his long-awaited debut, 'A Night in the Life.' According to his manager Breigh, Peedi was released from prison on April 1, and is currently hard at work at Philadelphia's Bat Cave Studios. Because he served a full-sentence, Peedi does not have to worry about parole this time around, serving out a simple probation.
Following his release, Peedi explained his past issues with Jay-Z during the rapper's run as Def Jam president in 2005.

"For one man to have control over the situation and not do it for whatever reason, I never knew what reason it was, I kinda have an idea but when he don't do that, of course you gonna be a little upset," Peedi explained in an interview. "The budgets were so crazy over there, we were blowing each other's budgets. I messed up at least $900,000. I blew $900,000 of Def Jam's money on flights, Moet, Cristal, lobster, shrimp, steak -- but that's because of Dame [Dash], he would just put the black card anywhere and let us ball and this went on for like the course of two, three years. Balling on Roc-A-Fella...Jay didn't care about that money because my budget was for $600,000, I was $200,000 over budget, right, even being over budget, I still didn't have the album done when I had the meeting with Jay. So I went to his office and explained that I would come through for him and get these songs done in like two weeks, he opened the budget up again for like $40,000 just to record at Baseline in Manhattan...I did the whole album in two weeks, so now that went up to like $840,000. So I don't think it was the money, it was just our relationship. To keep it real with myself, when he was ready, I wasn't ready. But then when I got myself ready, I guess he was just like, 'I'm done.' And that's the real deal."
Damon Dash recently said he was going to re-launch Roc-A-Fella Records through his artist, Curren$y.

"[Curren$y] inspired me to dust off the chains. We brought 'em out for kicks, just 'cause we could. Then we was like, 'F--- it, let's put it out through Roc-A-Fella.' It was really more something he wanted to do. Basically, 'cause we havin' such a good time, and the opportunity's there, we was like, 'Why not?' ... Def Jam or Universal bought the brand. I think the 'beef' [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn't want me or Biggs to be a part of it. That's really where it was at. Now that he doesn't work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn't have the right to use the name. So there's no reason for us not to use it. It's there, and it's a brand that's not being used. So I was like, 'I'll take it.' It always meant something to me."
