Drake Craves Legendary Status, "I Really Want To Grow & Be That Guy"
Young Money's Drake recently talked about moving past receiving rap co-signs and earning the right to inherit legendary status amongst fans.
From Drizzy's perspective, he has to gain each generation's attention in order to become legendary.
The accolades flatter Drake, but he still feels he isn't quite there-yet. "That's the most flattering thing in the world but at the same time, real, legendary status can't be dictated by the people who are still here witnessing it," he says. "Legendary status is when the next generation comes up. The kids that are 15 right now and will be going to college in five or six years-if they say, 'Yo, I remember when Drake came to this school. That's one of the most legendary shows ever,' that's when you're a legend. I'm young. I'm 23. This is too soon. I really want to grow and be that guy."
Last month, Drake talked about getting co-signed from older rap generation artists like Rick Ross and C-Murder.
"For anybody that doesn't believe in me, your favorite rappers do," he added. "They call me for hooks, features and all that. Ross, Jeezy, the hardest dudes--B.G., C-Murder calls me from jail. Turk calls me from jail to tell me I'm doing great. For the people that don't believe, the people that you do believe in got love for me. That's all that matters."
Rap heavyweight Fat Joe recently praised Drizzy's talent.
"He's just moving at a way faster pace than other artists have in the past," Joe explained in an interview. "He's putting out maybe five, six, seven hit records. You know how hard it is for a person to have one hit? So imagine what his album is like...Two very different artists...As far as I'm concerned, [50 Cent] had one hot album, and his first album was a classic and that's it. After that everything else was bubble gummed down. So Drake, I think he will outlast 50 Cent. If you talk about 50 Cent on top really making hot music it didn't even last two, three, four years. Looking at the quality of the music that Drake is making and the different lanes--he wrote that song for Alicia Keys, 'Unthinkable'--I think we ain't seen nobody like him yet."
Drake's popularity has also rubbed off on NBA superstar LeBron James.
"Unbelievable recording artist," LeBron said of Drake. "Unbelievable talent. I'm looking forward [to] his first LP. I think we all got So Far Gone and all the mixtapes he's come out with. But he's an unbelievable talent. He's great for everybody, great for music."
